Visual Studio 2008 Certifications - MCPD, MCTS

Categories: Microsoft Certification

I attended a Live meeting yesterday in regards to future Microsoft Certifications for developers (Visual Studio 2008).  Attached is the deck from it if you are interested.

Couple of key points:

·         MCAD and MCSD certifications will never expire

·         MCAD and MCSD certification exams will retire by end of year.

·         The new MCTS exams for Visual Studio 2008 will be available in March

·         They are working on an upgrade plan for MCPD 2.0 to MCPD 3.5. (will consist of 1 upgrade exam)

·         MCAD and MCSD can upgrade to MCPD 2.0 with a couple of exams

UPDATE 04.11.08: You can now sign up to be notified when the new exams are available, and receive a 40% discount of an exam (sweet!) https://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/sqlvs/offer/default.mspx

Do you know if there is going to be a direct upgrade from MCAD to MCPD 3.5 or if first you have to updgarde to MCPD 2.0 and later 3.5?

Hi

I'm MCSD and MCAD for Microsoft.Net

Can i get MCPD 2 after the new Certification(MCPD 3.5) released?

Thanks

Yes, you can still get MCPD for the 2.0 framework after the 3.5 certs are released.

There is no direct path from MCAD/MCSD to 3.5 if you wanted to do that later - so you would need to upgrade to 2.0, and then upgrade to 3.5 once they establish that path.

Mido, Personally - it all depends on how far along you are with the exam process. If I read your post correctly, you are taking the first exam in April.

It's a personal choice - is MCPD 2.0 going to help your career in anyway? If yes, then go ahead and get it and then upgrade later.

Other wise, I would just wait for the new 3.5 Track.

regarding: The new MCTS exams for Visual Studio 2008 will be available in March

It's almost April already, but I don't see any MCTS 3.5 exams.

Are they being delayed ?

Thanks.

David, they have not released a date yet. Although, they have said that it will 'soon' be released from beta.

It will be announced in the MCP newsletter, and I'll blog it here too.

They do have some prep guides out there already:

Preparation Guide for Exam 70-562

TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, ASP.NET Application Development

Al,

If I was just starting out, I would go ahead and start with 2008.

To get started, you can use the Express editions which aren't full-featured, but do have the majority of the things you'll need to start learning.

Express Editions: http://www.microsoft.com/express/default.aspx

Beginning Learning Center: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/beginner/default.aspx

Is still a good time to do MCSD instead of doing MSTS?

I read in here that MCAD and MCSD certification exams will retire by end of year. What does that mean? Thanx

I am MCTS - Distributed Applications 2005. I want to update to MCPD: Enterprise Application Development 3.5 - 2008. How can I achieve this and what are the required exams ..

Thanks ..

SUshil

Dan Lewis  commented on  Friday, December 19, 2008  9:24 PM

Sushil, you have two paths from what I can tell. Both ways, you are going to have to take 5 exams. Of course with the second path however you will be MCPD for 2005 AND 2008. If it were me, I'd lean towards the second path.

Path 1 to MCPD: Enterprise Application Developer 3.5

Skip 2005, and get certified on 2008

1. MCTS: .NET Framework 3.5, Windows Forms Applications (Exam 70-536 and Exam 70-505)

2. MCTS: .NET Framework 3.5, ASP.NET Applications (Exam 70-536 and Exam 70-562)

3. MCTS: .NET Framework 3.5, ADO.NET Applications (Exam 70-536 and Exam 70-561)

4. MCTS: .NET Framework 3.5, Windows Communication Foundation Applications (Exam 70-536 and Exam 70-503)

5. Exam 70-565: PRO: Designing and Developing Enterprise Applications Using Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 (available soon)

Path 2 to MCPD: Enterprise Application Developer 3.5

Get certified on 2005, then upgrade to 2008

Assuming from your post that you are already MCTS Distributed Applications, which means you’ve already taken exam 70-536 (Application Development Foundation), and exam 70-529 (Distributed Application Development). To achieve MCPD: Enterprise Application Developer for 2005, you still need to be MCTS for Web and Window Applications. You can achieve those at this point by taking the following exams:

1. Exam 70–536 - TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0–Application Development Foundation

2. Exam 70–528 - TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 – Web-Based Client Development

Then you can take the final exam

3. Exam 70–549: PRO: Designing and Developing Enterprise Applications by Using the Microsoft .NET Framework

Then you can take upgrade exams to 2008

4. Exam 70-568: Upgrade: Transition your MCPD Enterprise Application Developer Skills to MCPD Enterprise Applications Developer 3.5, Part 1 (available soon)

and

5. Exam 70-569: Upgrade: Transition your MCPD Enterprise Application Developer Skills to MCPD Enterprise Applications Developer 3.5, Part 2 (available soon)

Good luck whatever path you take!
